William fought in the Revolutionary war from North Carolina.
William, his brother John and brother Levi received land in Hancock Co., GA for their service in the Rev. War.

Note: John Speights, b. 1739 served with Lt. Col. Mayhan's Regiment of Calvery. He served in SC from 178-1783 - the end of the war. He signed John SPIKES when writing for pay due him because that is the way Col. Mayhan had him on the muster roll.
