24. James MARR

family tradition states James Marr died at age 58 ie 1856 He was supposed to have ran 10 to 12 keelboats on the River Tyne. Keelboats were shallow draught boats which carried the coal from the colliaries up river from Newcastle where it was transferred to ships. The keel boats were made famous in a traditional Geordie song 'The Keel Row' See http://www.jaydax.co.uk/showcase/themes/rivertyne/tynebridge.html. Eventually the Tyne was dredged so that ships were able to load directly from the colliaries and the keelmen disappeared.
